Vacant/Edition is a publishing project through which Vacant archives its everyday practices while deepening its thinking on the newly articulated framework of Cultural Placeology. Moving back and forth between practice and reflection within specific places, the series is published on an irregular basis.

Following the inaugural issue, The Beginning of Place / Placeology, the theme of the second volume, Polylog, is a word that combines ‘polyphonic’ and ‘dialogue,’ opening a space for cultural dialogue in which the importance of culture is mutually reexamined and affirmed.

In the process of creating exhibitions, dialogue with artists is indispensable. Such dialogue differs from everyday conversation or debates that seek correctness; it is an activity of quietly listening to one another’s existence and experiences within an open and equal relationship that transcends interests. (From the Preface)

As a practice of Polylog, this volume brings together six dialogues in which six artists who have previously exhibited at Vacant/Centre and Vacant founder Yusuke Nagai look back on their exhibitions together, tracing the processes through which ‘place’ came into being. In addition, the volume includes an essay on Cultural Placeology by Nagai himself; following the previous issue’s focus on ‘space and place,’ this installment takes ‘culture’ as its central theme.
