1960年代半ばに、アンダーグラウンドな自己出版作品がブームとなりました。ヘクトグラフ（コンニャク版）、ミメオグラフ（ガリ版）、オフセット印刷は、小規模で低コストの印刷を実現するだけでなく、自由なモックアップ、活字の美学、手書き、ラフなドローイング、コラージュ、ポルノ、スナップショット、漫画など、ユニークな美学を促進しました。ドイツのブレーメンで行われた展覧会と併せて出版された本書は、西ドイツから生まれたアンダーグラウンドな自己出版作品を最初に紹介した作品であり、それらが出現した国際的な文脈も示しています。逸話的な歴史としてではなく、戦後の復興運動であったDo It Yourself運動の美学を利用しようとする試みとして、現在のセルフパブリッシングやリソグラフなどのブームを新たに見直します。
